Training Bachelors in the Major of Language and Literature

A Bachelor’s program in the major of Language and Literature consists in:

  • theoretical education (221 ECTS credits) in the discipline as in-class learning (lectures, seminars, practical classes) and self-learning; 
  • theoretical education ensuring basic qualification acquisition in Philology is 192.5 ECTS credits the academic disciplines ensuring advanced training in Philology are 163 ECTS credits;
  • specialization course papers (4.5 ECTS credits);
  • translation practice (4 weeks, 6 ECTS credits) and specialization practice (4 weeks, 6 ECTS credits);
  • teaching practice (4 weeks, 6 ECTS credits).

Students receive credits when successfully completing written and oral tests in academic disciplines, defending course papers or reports on practices. The final state assessment consists in complex State Examinations in two foreign languages.

Successful completion of the program results in the person being qualified acquiring fundamental professional and career-oriented knowledge and skills required to perform typical professional tasks related to educational, methodological and organizational activities at different secondary and preschool institutions.

The Bachelor’s  educational-qualification level in the major of Language and Literature consists in acquiring the following professional knowledge, skills and competences:

  • fluency in Ukrainian and two foreign languages;
  • practical knowledge of foreign languages (listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing, translation);
  • fundamental knowledge in Philology;
  • competence in methodology of teaching foreign languages and literature in professional institutions of the I-III levels of accreditation;
  • knowledge of concepts at the disposal of the Humanities and social sciences and ability to apply methods of these sciences in various spheres of teaching and research;
  • knowledge of modern scientific methods of philological research, sufficient competence for conducting research in philological sciences;
  • knowledge of methods of carrying out experiments in Linguistics, Language Studies, Literature Criticism and Teaching Didactics;
  • ability to independently conduct research related to foreign languages;
  • an ability to work with computer equipment and effectively use it to process Philology-related research materials and results;
  • ability to educate and develop pupils through the foreign language taught in class and extracurricular work (interest groups, clubs, interest sections, problem groups, scientific groups, etc.);
  • ability to carry out scientific and methodological as well as organizational and methodological work in implementing new information technologies of teaching/learning foreign languages into the process of education, including intensive learning methods, individualized learning, etc.
  • ability to apply the professional knowledge, abilities and skills in practice, study linguistic phenomena and solve practical problems in Philology;
  • ability to use and analyze pedagogical experience including innovations and personal expertise;
  • ability to exercise self-control, self-evaluation, self-regulation and to reveal shortcomings in professional activity to eliminate them;
  • ability to correct and forecast educational and tutorial work;
  • ability to apply educational methods and teaching aids, including those in the foreign language, effective for a certain type secondary educational institution;
  • ability to determine pupils’ individual and psychological peculiarities required for successful foreign language acquisition;
  • ability to carry out psychological and pedagogical analysis of the lesson in a foreign language and the process of education on the whole;
  • ability to study  pupils’ individual and psychological peculiarities required for successful foreign language acquisition in a certain type secondary educational institution;
  • ability to objectively evaluate contents and means of foreign language teaching in a certain type secondary educational institution.
