Focusing on various aspects and problems of translation, translation training methods.
On April 23-24, 2015, the School of Foreign Languages held the VIII International Conference “Relevant Issues of Translation Studies and Translation Training Methods” conducted on the initiative of the Department of English Translation Theory and Practice.
The conference brought together 73 researchers from 23 universities of Ukraine as well as the University of Tartu (Estonia) and O.
In her welcoming address, the Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Valentyna Pasynok, told those present about the traditions of Kharkiv translation studies school and emphasized the incredible importance of the fundamental training of future translators at a higher educational institution citing the famous Italian writer Umberto Ecowho who said that “translation quality is determined not by the word-for-word rendering, but by transferring one world into the other”.
The Head of the Department of English Translation Theory and Practice, Oleksandr Rebrii, outlined the history of conferences in translation studies at the Department and thanked the participants from other cities that despite the difficult times for the country they had managed to come to Kharkiv and share their scientific groundwork and ideas with their colleagues.
During the first plenary meeting those present heard the reports by Professors O. Rebrii, L. Chernovaty, A. Martyniuk, Associate Professor O. Kalnychenko (V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University), Professor O. Panchenko (Oles Honchar Dnipropetrovsk National University), Associate Professors T. Nekriach and V. Radchuk (Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv).
The first plenary meeting agenda also included the presention of the new editions published with the participation of the Department faculty members: Peeter Torop’s monograph Total Translation, collected works On Art of Translation by Volodymyr Derzhavin,and the first issue of the almanac New Proteus.
The Head of the Promova Company, V. Vorobyov presented the program ELIA EXCHANGE aimed at establishment of cooperation between European universities. Associate Professor O. Bondarenko’s presentation (Volodymyr Vynnychenko Kirovohrad State Pedagogical University) was dedicated to the relevant issues of cooperation between higher educational institutions and the professional environment.

The second day of the conference also started with the plenary meeting. The Head of the Department of Theory and Practice of English Translation of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, L. Kolomiiets, S. Tkachenko, and Professor of the Department of Culture Semiotics of the University of Tartu, Director of the Institute of Philosophy and Semiotics of the University of Tartu, President of Estonian Semiotics Association, Peeter Torop, presented their reports there.
After the second plenary meeting there was held a round-table discussion of literary translators moderated by Associate Professor O. Kalnychenko. The invited guests were Serhii Tkachenko, Ihor Ilin, Serhii Potimkov, Oleksandra Kovalova, Lutsina Khvorost, Viacheslav Novikov. The participants recited excerpts from their own translations and exchanged their ideas as to the development of literary translation in Ukraine.
The last event on the agenda of the second day of the conference was the lecture by Professor Peeter Torop “Semiotics and Translation”:
