Conference 'Fiction Phenomena in World Literature History: Transition of Language into Authorship': Opening

Discussing the vector of “horizon of expectation” as the art of reception.

Karazin University has held the opening of the International Scientific Conference ‘Fiction Phenomena in World Literature History: Transition of Language into Authorship’ bringing together scholars from Ukraine and all over the world.

Conference organizers: Department of Romance Philology and Translation, Department of Oriental Languages and Intercultural Communication, Department of German Philology and Translation (School of Foreign Languages).

The participants were more than 100 scholars, including 17 Doctors of Sciences, 33 Candidates of Sciences, a lot of postgraduate students from different cities of Ukraine (Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Lutsk, Ternopil, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kamianets-Podilsk, Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, Kramatorsk, Kherson, Siverodonetsk). Scholars from Spain, France, Poland, China, Canada and Peru participated in the conference remotely.

The Associate Dean for Research of the School of Foreign Languages, Nataliia Onishchenko, wished all the participants and guests creative inspiration and a fruitful discussion.

“Our school has been opening new horizons for 20 years. Finally, foreign philology has received a new direction, because philology cannot be considered full-blooded without foreign literature,” pointed out Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Character Building, Serhii Mashchenko.

The Head of the Department of Romance Philology and Translation, Svitlana Kryvoruchko, mentioned in her speech to the participants and guests of the conference, “When looking at the photos of the previous conference, you recognize yourself and your like-mined people and recall that year’s scientific discussion. This year we have offered to discuss the vector of “horizon of expectation” as the art of reception. The term “horizon of expectation” refers us to comprehension of the historical, social, cultural, historical and literary, biographical context of literary works. Today we are discussing this scientific issue together with our like-minded people and opponents from different countries”.

Another item within the framework of the vector of “horizon of expectation” was a presentation of the book "History of Department of Romance Philology" written by the creative team of the Department's faculty and dedicated to the 210th anniversary of Karazin University's foundation. This book diachronically speculates on Romance philology establishment and writes the personaliae in the historical discourse.

“On the one hand, “horizon of expectation” is dynamic and changeable; on the other hand, it outlines the relevance of the works we have chosen, as it marks the intersection of the past and the future opening the prospect and another view of already familiar things. Of course, interpretation is influenced by aesthetic taste of the “professional reader”, explained Ms. Kryvoruchko.

The further work of the conference continued within the framework of sections addressing the following areas of research: narrative strategies and chronotope specificity of fiction works, associations of artistic systems, image order of characters, motives, composition, modern pedagogical principles of teaching foreign languages and linguistic transition from classical to alternative norms.

The program of the conference also provides for an excursion about the University History Museum, theater and a city tour.
