Happy International Translation Day!

Happy International Translation Day!

Congratulations to translators and interpreters on their professional holiday! May inspiration, success and new achievements attend them!

International Translation Day is celebrated every year on September 30. The holiday was established by the International Federation of Translators in 1991. It should be noted that the date was chosen not by chance because September 30 is Day of St. Jerome Strydonskyi, writer, theologian, author of the first complete translation of the Bible from Greek and Hebrew. His translation was recognized as canon by the Roman Catholic Church and was called "Vulgata." St. Jerome Strydonskyi is considered the patron saint of translators.

Every year, the International Federation of Translators determines the motto of the holiday, which, in 2016, is "Translation and Interpreting: Connecting Worlds."

Among Karazin University alumni there are many famous and talented translators and linguists — Oleksandr Potebnia, Petro Hulak-Artemovskyi, Ivan Bilodid, Petro Veinberg, Vasyl Mysyk. Ivan Franko is a Doctor Honoris Causa of the University, and translations of ancient literature occupy a significant place in his creative heritage.

The Department of English Translation Theory and Practice of the School of Foreign Languages has trained a galaxy of specialists whose professional formation took place, in particular, in the translation studies under the direction of the famous Ukrainian writer and translator Inna Havrylchenko. Today, the studies are supervized by the Associate Professor of the Department Oleksandr Kalnychenko.

Among Karazin University literary artists there are our contemporaries as well — the leading translator of the Center for Web Communications, Associate Professor of the Department of English Philology of the School of Foreign Languages, Tetyana Varenko, whose English verse novel Elfineness was awarded the silver medal at the International Literary Contest Feathered Quill Book Awards. And, in 2016, Tetyana Varenko was awarded honorary mention in the third annual poetry competition Rhyme On 2016. The author’s poem "Life Begins" was highly appreciated by the jury.

This year, on the occasion of International Translation Day, festive events took place at Karazin University as well. In particular, the Department of English Translation Theory and Practice held a traditional meeting with the leading translators of Kharkiv and Ukraine Oleksandra Kovaliova, Ihor Iliin, Serhii Potimkov and Serhii Aleksandrovskyi, the main purpose of which was to exchange professional experience.

In addition, on September 28, the Associate Professor of the Department of English Translation Theory and Practice Oleksandr Kalnychenko gave a lecture on outstanding translators, whose names are associated with Karazin University. The lecture, held in E bookstore, was attended by well-known Kharkiv translators, in particular, Oleksandra Kovaliova, who read out her translations of German poetry and the original works. The event illustrated the potential of Kharkiv school of literary translation.

Congratulations to translators and interpreters on their professional holiday! May inspiration, success and new achievements attend them!
