All-Ukrainian Research-to-Practice Conference “Issues of Oriental Studies in Ukraine”

It is the first conference held by the Department of Oriental Languages and Intercultural Communication.


On April 6, 2017, the School of Foreign Languages of Karazin University held the All-Ukrainian Research-to-Practice Conference “Issues of Oriental Studies in Ukraine” that brought together over 130 scholars whose research focused on studying Oriental languages from the People's Republic of China, Azerbaijan, Russia and Ukraine. This day was special for the School of Foreign Languages because it was the first conference held by the Department of Oriental Languages and Intercultural Communication. The conference was held in cooperation with the School of Foreign Philology and the School of History of H. S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University.

The Dean of the School of Foreign Languages of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Valentyna Pasynok, opened the conference. She emphasized the significance of this event for both the School and the University. The Second Secretary of the Embassy of Israel in Ukraine, Head of the Israeli Cultural Center in Kharkiv, Alica Liderman, and the Director of the Confucius Institute, Din Shyven, greeted the participants and guests of the conference in his welcoming address and wished everyone a fruitful discussion and successful scientific cooperation.

At the plenary meeting, the attendees heard the reports delivered by the official of Political Section of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Turkey Yevgeniya Gaber (“Problems and Prospects of the Development of Cooperation between Ukrainian and Turkish Higher Educational Institutions”), the Head of the Department of Oriental Languages of H. S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University Liubov Kalashnyk (“The Role of Foreign National and Religious Formations in Shaping the System of Social Care for Minors in China”), the Head of the Department of Art Studies, Literary Studies and Linguistics of Kharkiv State Academy of Culture Svitlana Rybalko ( “Japanese Traditional Outfit in Culturological Discourse”), the Head of the Department of Romance Philology and Translation of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University Svitlana Kryvoruchko (“Conflict East/West in the Novel “A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers” by Xiaolu Guo), the Professor of the Department of Philosophy and Political Science of Kharkiv State Academy of Culture Anatolii Shchedrin (“West and East in Context of Paradigmatics of Historical and Culturological Studies”), the Associate Professor of the Department of Ancient and Medieval History of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University Andrii Domanovskyi (“Charter on the Spear as Khorugv and Coins in the Quiver Like Arrows: about Symbolism of Description of Arab-Byzantine-Slavic Relations between Theophan and Nicephorus in 692”), the Head of Omeljan Pritsak Research Center for Oriental Studies of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy Taisiia Sydorchuk, (“On History of Scientific Cooperation between Omeljan Pritsak and Japanese Scholars”), the Associate Professor of the Department of Oriental Languages of H. S. Skovoroda of Kharkiv National Pedagogical University Iryna Bykova (“Interaction of Verbal and Non-Verbal Means of Communication in Chinese Culture”).

After the plenary meeting, further work of the conference continued within the framework of section sessions addressing the following areas of research:

  • Linguistics and translation studies of the Eastern countries.
  • Literature of the Eastern countries.
  • Philosophy and culture of the Eastern countries.
  • Education and upbringing in the Eastern countries.
  • Methods of teaching oriental disciplines.
  • History of the East: problems of theory and practice.
  • Economics, politics, society of the Eastern countries.

The conference program also included workshops on methods of teaching oriental disciplines held at the Center for Oriental Cultures of H. S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University on April 7, 2017 and a city tour.
