IX International Scientific and Methodological Conference “Methodological and Psychological-Pedagogical Problems of Foreign Language Teaching at the Present Stage: Ways of Integrating Secondary and Higher Schools”

Conference program: a plenary meeting, three workshops and five sectional sessions.


On April 28, 2017, the School of Foreign Languages held the IX International Scientific and Methodological Conference “Methodological and Psychological-Pedagogical Problems of Foreign Language Teaching at the Present Stage: Ways of Integrating Secondary and Higher Schools”.

This year, the co-organizers of the conference were the Department of Foreign Language Teaching Methods and Practice and the Department of English Language. The conference is a common project with Kharkiv Academy of Continuing Education, whose integral constituent was to involve the teachers of secondary schools in participating.

The Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Valentyna Pasynok, the Associate Professor of the Department of Languages and Literature Teaching Methods of the Public Higher Educational Institution “Kharkiv Academy of Continuing Education”, Viktoriia Bulhakova, and the Head of the Department of English Language of the School of Foreign Languages, Olha Polotska, opened the conference wishing the participants and guests of the conference successful work, fruitful discussion and exchange of experience.

At the plenary meeting the following reports were made:

  • “Master Culture of Speech”
    (Speaker: Dean of the School of Foreign languages of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Doctor of Pedagogy, Full Professor, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Higher Education of Ukraine, Valentyna Pasynok);
  • “Learner Autonomy and My English Lab: Motivating Students to Do More Outside of Class
    (Speaker: Methodologist of the International Training Center “Pearson-Dinternal”, Michael Hudson);
  • “Competency-Based Approach as a Methodology of Specialists’ Professional Training”
    (Speaker: Head of the Department of Creative Pedagogy and Intellectual Property of the Ukrainian Engineering Pedagogics Academy, Doctor of Pedagogy, Full Professor V. Ye. Luniachek);
  • "New Media in Foreign Language Education Corresponding to the BOYD Principle"
    (Speaker: Lecturer of the German Academic Exchange Service(DAAD), Cedric Reichel);
  • “Foreign Language Teaching Aids in terms of New/Ukrainian Schools”
    (Speaker: English teacher of Kharkiv specialized school No. 162, educator-methodologist, high-achiever in education of Ukraine, chief editor of the All-Ukrainian Scientific and Methodological Journal “English Language and Literature” of the Publishing Group “Osnova”, O. S. Liubchenko).

After the plenary meeting, the participants and guests of the conference could attend three workshops:

  1. “My English Lab: Getting More from Your Coursebook” (Speaker: Michael Hudson, a methodologist of the International Training Center “Pearson-Dinternal”);
  2. “Pragmatics and Foreign Language Teaching” (Speaker: Günther Depner, a full professor of the University of Bochum (Germany);
  3. “Prevention and Resolution of Conflicts in Academic Process” (Speaker: I. S. Serheieva, a PhD in Philology, an associate professor of the Department of Romance Philology of H. S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University).

Within the framework of the conference, there were five sections working fruitfully. The participants discussed the general problems of teaching and control, theory and methods of teaching foreign languages in secondary and higher schools; didactic and psychological aspects of learning foreign languages in secondary and higher schools; professional training in foreign languages (for students with non-language majors); new approaches to teaching foreign languages.
