Kharkiv Scholars in Belgorod: Meetings with Teun Adrianus van Dijk

Kharkiv scholars from the School of Foreign Languages attended Teun Adrianus van Dijk’s lecture in Belgorod.

On March 15, 2013 the representative delegation of scholars from the School of Foreign Languages comprising Full Professors I. S. Shevchenko, Ye. I. Morozova, A. P. Martyniuk, L. V. Soloshchuk, Associate Professors I. Ye. Frolova, O. A. Chornovol-Tkachenko and many postgraduate students visited Belgorod National Research University where attended a lecture and a presentation of the monograph Discourse and Power (2008) given by the distinguished contemporary linguist T. A. van Dijk. The lively scientific debate tackled the most pressing issues of discourse analysis, important both for Kharkiv and for European scientific schools.

Teun A. vanDijk is a recognized representative of critical discourse analysis, engaged in studying problems of social and political conditionality of linguistic phenomena. He is author of over 250 articles and 60 monographs in sociolinguistic and discourse-analytic subject matter that have brought him international recognition. Among them are: Text and context. Explorations in the semantics and pragmatics of discourse (1977), Racism and the Press (1991), Ideology: A Multidisciplinary Approach (1998), Society and Discourse. How social contexts control text and talk (2008), etc. He is founder and editor of the influential field journals: Discourse and Society, Discourse Studies,Discourse and Communication. Now Professor van Dijk is working at Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona, Spain).

His monograph Discourse and Power (2008) presents the results of years of research conducted by the author on the problems of discourse representation and construction of power-based relations ranging from the media language to political debate. The book was translated into many languages and for the first time published in Russian (Moscow: Librokom, 2013).
