The Window on America Information Center of Karazin University held a workshop for faculty and students entitled “Mastering Culture and Language through Films” conducted by US Senior English Language Fellow Eve Smith.

During the workshop held on December 12, Ms. Smith shared her personal methodological experience in teaching English as a foreign language and outlined a few English teaching strategies. She stressed the importance of promoting positive competition and personal development among students: on the example of one practical lesson using the Soul Surfer movie she demonstrated how you can teach students overcome their fears and negative emotions under stress. Thus, within the lesson framework not only can students develop their communicative skills in English and enrich their vocabulary, but they also learn to look at things from different angles, in perspective, get acquainted with cultural peculiarities of the county whose language they learn.

During the workshop held on December 13, Ms. Smith addressed some nuances in writing successful essays for Fulbright academic exchange programs.
