“Christmas in Germany”

“Christmas in Germany”

A cultural and educational event in German was held for students of the School.

The Department of German Philology and Translation of the School of Foreign Languages held an extracurricular cultural and educational event in German on December 25, 2013. The event was themed “Christmas in Germany”. Its participants were the students of groups YaA-22 and YaA-23 who study German as their second foreign language.

The main aims of this activity were:

  1. Systematization of knowledge with the use of the lexical material within the topic “Christmas in Germany”.
  2. Development of the students’ skills in monologue speech.
  3. Improvement of their skills in listening comprehension.

Footage of how Christmas is celebrated in Germany and audio recordings of different Christmas carols were used in the framework of this activity. Besides, a “Christmas Traditions” trivia was held (complemented with a presentation in PowerPoint), and wall newspapers were made.

During the event the students performed previously memorized Christmas carols in German, which included "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht", "Oh, Tannenbaum", and "Schlittenfahrt". They also took part in the trivia game, watched a short video clip on celebration of Christmas in Germany and answered questions on its content, presented topical wall newspapers in German, and spoke on traditional dishes that are prepared in Germany for Christmas.

The students’ presentations of Christmas dishes, which they had prepared themselves with the use of recipes found online, followed by their tasting was the climax of the event. Among the dishes presented by the participants there were traditional Christmas pies, cookies, salads and drinks.

All of the students were perfectly prepared for the event and had a great time.
