XIII Scientific Conference “Karazin Readings: Person. Language. Communication"

The School of Foreign Languages hosts a scientific conference with international participation.


On February 7, 2014, the School of Foreign Languages of Karazin University hosted the XIII scientific conference “Karazin Readings: Person. Language. Communication” with international participation.

This year, 250 scientists from 57 higher educational institutions from Ukraine and abroad (Russia, Moldova, Germany, France) submitted applications for participation and abstracts of their reports.Before the beginning of the conference the programs, compendium of abstracts in two parts came out (the compendium is available at the “Conference materials of the School of Foreign Languages”).

Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Doctor of Pedagogy, Full Professor, Academician of the Higher School Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Valentyna Pasynok and Associate Dean, Associate Professor Serhii Mashchenko solemnly opened the conference. Reports were given by:

  • Lyudmila Ryzhova, Doctor of Philology, Professor of the Department of Romance Philology, Moscow City Teachers’ Training University.
  • Iryna Shevchenko, Doctor of Philology, Full Professor, Academician of the Higher School Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Head of the Department of Business Foreign Language and Translation of Karazin University.
  • Liliia Bezuhla, Doctor of Philology, Full Professor of the Department of German Philology and Translation of Karazin University.
  • Olha Afanasieva, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor, Associate Director for Research of Oleksiivska Branch of Belgorod National Research University (OB NRU “BelSU”).
  • Pavlo Donets, Doctor of Philology, Full Professor of the Department of German Philology and Translation of Karazin University.

After the plenary meeting, the work continued under the following sessions:

  1. “Peculiarities of the Lexical System of National Languages. Phraseology”: special attention was paid to matters concerning semantics and loanwords, modern tools of derivational analysis.
  2. “Translation and Interpretation Studies. Comparative Linguistics. Ethnolinguistics”: various types and methods of translation were analyzed.Special attention was devoted to literary translation.
  3. “Characteristics, Strategies and Tactics of Discourse”: this section touches upon separate forms of communication, characteristics of discourse, and causes of success/failure of communication.
  4. “General Issues of Discourse. Pragmatics of Discourse”: the discussion delved into pragmatic issues of advertisement, political and everyday discourse, discursive characteristics of speaking, implicit meanings in discourse.
  5. “Concept and its Linguistic Interpretation”: the discussion focused on structures and modi of concepts of different levels of abstraction.
  6. “Text and Genre. Artistic Discourse”: phenomenon of precedent, cognitive principles of rhetorical figures, and matters of relativity of interlevel cognitive-discursive creations were discussed.
  7. "Modern Approaches to Teaching Foreign Languages": the discussions addressed neurophysiological bases of teaching, motivation of students and lecturers, formation of the background knowledge framework.
  8. "Professional training of future philologists and translators. Teaching Foreign Languages at Non-Language Higher Educational Institutions”: the discussions tackled issues of listening comprehension teaching, organization of lessons on home reading, usage of multimedia.

The conference continued on February 8 with a public lecture given by Liudmila Ryzhova (Full Professor of the Department of Roman Philology of Moscow City Teachers’ Training University) entitled "French Version of Linguistic Pragmatics".

“French linguistics is very diverse.There is a famous aphorism saying that there is as much linguistics as there are linguists.Of course, not all of them are famous in France, but most of them have works that deserve more acknowledgement in scientific communities.The subject of my research was the most important research findings of French linguists of 1960s-1990s as well as works of some Swiss and Belgian scientists in French,” told Liudmila Ryzhova.

During the lecture the scientist acquainted everyone present with the general concepts of linguistics, dwelled on the nuances of language origin and revolution studies, touched upon semiotic systems, and offered a brief outline of the main principles of formation and development of the French linguistic paradigm, its semiotic models: the triad comprising syntactics, semantics, and paradigm; and the trivium consisting of grammar, dialectics and rhetoric.

Within the framework of the event Professor Liudmila Ryzhova also characterized the conceptual-epistemological model of linguistic theory analysis, theoretical paradigm, in particular general rational grammar, comparative-historical, system-structural, and communicative-functional linguistics, as well as methods of their analysis, focal points of interests, paradigm-forming principles of linguistics, etc.
