XVI International Scientific Conference “Karazin Readings: Person. Language. Communication”

Wrap-up.

On March 27, 2015 the School of Foreign Languages held the XVI International Scientific Conference Karazin Readings: Person. Language. Communication.

This year 166 scholars, including 129 from other cities, applied for participation in the conference. The applications came from Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Germany. The participants represented 42 higher educational institutions of Ukraine and two foreign ones: T. H. Shevchenko Transdniestria State University (Moldova), Alekseevska Branch of Belgorod State National Research University (Russia). The program and the compendium of abstracts of the reports had come out before the beginning of the conference.

The Associate Deans of the School of Foreign Languages, Serhii Mashchenko and Nataliia Onishchenko, solemnly opened the conference. Full Professor Iryna Shevchenko and Associate Professor Yullia Shamaieva made reports on linguistics; Associate Professor Oleksandr Rebrii and Full Professor Viktoriia Samokhina (Kharkiv) — on translation studies.

After the break the conference resumed its work in the following sections:

Current issues of general linguistics. Morphology and Syntax. Phonetics. Specifics of the lexical systems of national languages: addressing indirect nomination of cities, correlation of the concepts “operation” and “procedure”, “mechanism”, “method” in world building, methodology of phonosemantic research.

Translation studies and history of translation. Comparative linguistics: addressing translation in different genres, translation difficulties, studies of the Ukrainian tradition in the history of translation, training of translators/interpreters; features, strategies, tactics of discourse; mass-media discourse; the mechanisms of a stereotyped personality, contemporary models of genre differentiation of discourse, cinema text, Internet discourse,

General issues of discourse analysis. Discourse Pragmatics: addressing lexico-syntactic, pragmatic and cognitive organization of poetic and constitutional discourses, detective story discourse, verbal aspects of communication, speech realization of the strategic potential in discourse.

Concept and its linguistic representation: addressing the correlation between religious and secular discourses, the model of the linguocultural concept of a person’s appearance, the peculiarities of the cognitive terminology.

Text and genre. Artistic discourses: addressing the status of text concepts, the archetype-concept-symbol interrelation, the conditions for archetype rupture, the implicative space and means of its formation.

Professional training of philologists and translators. Contemporary approaches to foreign language teaching in non-linguistic higher educational institutions: addressing the communicative approach to teaching grammar, the use of video materials in language learning, methodological components of foreign language teacher training, shaping of the polycultural world perception, professionalism of faculty, the role of world literature in the range of interests of students studying foreign languages.

According to the reports of the the section moderators, there were 65 participants present, with 58 making reports. It is also worth mentioning that a lot of reports were given by postgraduate students and young scholars, including those from other cities.

The next XVII International Scientific Conference Karazin Readings: Person. Language. Communication is to be held on February 5, 2016.
