 Lecture “Dante's Characters in the Works of Artists of Different Epochs”

The speaker was the Professor of Italian Linguistics of Gabriele D’Annunzio University, Antonio Sorella.


On the initiative of the Ukrainian-Italian Academic Center and the Department of Romance Philology and Translation of the School of Foreign Languages, Karazin University held the lecture "Dante’s Characters in the Works of Artists of Different Epochs".

The speaker was the Professor of Italian Linguistics of Gabriele D’Annunzio University of Chieti-Pescara (Italy), the author of over 70 articles in the field of linguistics Antonio Sorella. The preamble to the lecture was the news that Gabriele D’Annunzio University of Chieti-Pescara (Italy) and Karazin University had developed a cooperation agreement, which is currently at the stage of approval and signing.

Antonio Sorella also pointed out that many students and faculty members of the гniversity he represents are enthusiastic about the prospect of studying under the educational programs of Karazin University.

The speaker acquainted those present with the image of Dante in the works of world’s artists, demonstrated portraits painted by Raphael, Michelangelo Buonarroti stressing the lack of reliable existing sources of information about their appearance. Antonio Sorella analyzed in detail the artistic vision of the image of the prominent Italian.

The attendees had an opportunity to see the pictures of little-known Italian artists depicting episodes from Dante’s creative heritage and some facts from his biography. The professor devoted special attention to the image of Dante’s beloved Beatrice. Being a connoisseur of Dante’s works, Michelangelo Buonarroti depicted Beatrice as an angel in one of his frescoes; and Rosetti showed his personal vision that keeps inspiring artists even today.

The lecturer underlined that the poet to have suffered exile from his native city in his lifetime is honored not only in Italy but in the entire world today. In particular, Dante’s House Museum operates in Florence, it preserves manuscripts, clothing, reproductions of paintings by famous artists and the documents helping to better understand the poet’s life in Florence and the time he lived in.
