International Translation Day Celebration: Updated

International Translation Day Celebration: Updated

Sincere congratulations to translators and interpreters on their professional holiday! May inspiration and success attend!

Every September 30 is celebrated as International Translation Day. The date was chosen by the International Federation of Translators to honor the writer, historian and translator of the Bible from Greek and Hebrew into Latin, St. Jerome. In 1546 his translation, which was called ‘Vulgata’ was proclaimed to be the official Latin text of the Holy Writ, and Jerome himself is believed patron of translators.

Within the International Translation Day celebration, the E Bookstore held an exhibition-presentation of the latest editions prepared by the faculty of the Department of Translation Theory and Practice of the School of Foreign Languages. In particular, Associate Professor Oleksandr Kalnychenko presented the following publications: New Proteus almanac, the Ukrainian translation of the famous work Total Translation by the Estonian scientist Peeter Torop, and the collection of articles and reviews On Art of Translation by Kharkivite Volodymyr Derzhavin. A lot of attention was devoted to the achievements of the famous Ukrainian translators and translation studies experts whose ideas were often in advance of their time.

The Department also initiated and held the evening of literary translation whose guests were famous Kharkiv translators Inna Melnytska, Oleksandra Kovalova, Ihor Ilin and Serhii Potimkov. The honorary guests created an inspiring atmosphere of the evening. They shared their experience in translation and its teaching, recited their poetry translations of famous world literature and presented their own creative endeavors. The evening became another proof that Karazin University had created an incredibly powerful school of literary translation and an infallible basis for professional development of many an expert whose destiny is interwoven with our Alma Mater. We have a lot to be proud of and work for.

We would like to thank the participants for the inspiration and an example to follow!

Special thanks to Mr. Kalnychenko and Ms. Voronina for organizing the event.

Let us sincerely congratulate translators and interpreters on their professional holiday! May inspiration and success attend!
