Faculty life

Life in the faculty is not only lectures, seminars, coursework, diplomas but also a lot of different things. Faculty life is full of sunshine, professional growth and creativity!

The School of Foreign Languages comprises nine departments:

October 6, 2019 Teachers of the Department of English Philology took part in a seminar for winners of projects to develop the potential of higher education Erasmus +
This year, a team of scientists from V.N.Karazin Kharkiv National University with partners from other universities won the Erasmus + competition with the project 610427-EPP-1-20191-EE-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP "Foreign Language Teacher Training Capacity Development as a Way to Ukraine's Multilingual Education and European Integration ”within the framework of the“ National Window ”. Professor of the Department of English Philology O. Morozova, who is the head of the team of V.N. Kharkiv National University Karazina, took part in a seminar for winners of projects to develop the potential of higher education Erasmus +, which was held on November 6 at the Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University. The meeting was devoted to issues of how to successfully implement the project and manage grant funds.


On 09 and 10 December the defense of master's workstook place at the Department of English Philology .

This year, 20 graduates successfully defended their diplomas, 17 of them get "excellent", 3 - "good", no "satisfactory" and "unsatisfactory" grades!

The head of the department Victoria Samokhina noted that master's works both in linguistics and in the methodics of English teaching are particularly high.

Members of the Department of English Philology are actively researching!

In 2019 alone, 3 scientific manuals were published at the department (one of them has the MES stamp), 5 monographs (two of them in the Netherlands, two in Latvia and one in Kiev). 19 articles were published, 9 of them in international publications and 32 abstracts, 9 of the them in foreign publications of Poland, the Netherlands, Latvia, Romania, Germany, Austria, France and other European countries. Also, teachers of the department took part in 12 conferences, 11 of which are international.
On May 23, Skrynnik Yulia Sergeevna defended her thesis on "Discursive variability of verbal and non-verbal behavior of speakers when changing social roles (based on English)."

  • Department of German Philology and Translation;

Under the guidance of Prof. Liliya Bezugla a poetry studio “LiTerra” runs at the department, where everyone who is interested in translation can learn how to translate German poetry.


On 10-11 September 2019 Assoc. Prof. Svitlana Sotnikova held a methodical seminar "Integrated Learning in German Lessons" for teachers in Kharkiv and Kharkiv region, organized by the Kharkiv Academy of Continuing Education and the Goethe Institute of Ukraine (Kharkiv, school № 152).


On 19September 2019 Assoc. Prof. Nataliya Onishchenko held a master class "Technology “Bring your own device” in the classroom".


On 7 February 2020, as part of the 19th scientific conference with international participation, “Karazin Readings: MAN. LANGUAGE. COMMUNICATION”, a collective monograph was presented under the editorship of Prof. Liliya Bezugla "From word to an act: pragmatics of discourse." The monograph is the result of dissertation research conducted at the Faculty of Foreign Languages of V.N.Karazin Kharkiv National University from 2007 to 2019 under the supervision of Prof. Liliya Bezugla, and united by the methodological basis - linguistic pragmatics in its modern - discursive - understanding.

The monograph includes among others sections written by Germanists of the Department of German Philology and Translation: Prof Liliya Bezugla, Assoc. Prof. Serhiy Krivoruchko, Assoc. Prof. Olena Novikova, Assoc. Prof. Nataliya Govorukhov, Assoc. Prof. Iryna Panchenko, Assoc. Prof. Olesya Malaya.


  • Department of Romance Philology and Translation;

From 26 to 29 November 2019, at the invitation of the Department of Romance Philology and Translation and the Department of German and French Languages, the Faculty of Foreign Languages visited Ms Estelle Sallron (IPC, Paris, France). During the visit the opportunities for studying at the Karazin University of French students were presented, Mrs. Sallron gave an open lecture "Baudelaire: Principles of Analysis of Prose Works" for students and teachers of French language, held a methodical seminar "New Perspectives on the Foreign Language Teaching with French Participation" and teachers of HEIs of Kharkiv, organized a student colloquium "Ukrainica", discussed the prospects of future cooperation vectors.


On February 22, 2020, the final of the 1st All-Ukrainian Translation Competition among Lviv European students was held. In the nomination “French language” the first place was taken by the student of the 1st year of the Master's Degree in the Department of Romance Philology and Translation Veronica Halychyna. We sincerely congratulate the winner and wish you every success!


  • Mykola Lukash Translation Studies Department;

Mykola Lukash Translation Studies Department conducted the elimination round of All-Ukrainian Student Translation Olympiad (English Language) among 4th-year Bachelor students and 1st-year Master students. The tasks were on translation and interpreting, including translation of popular science and literary texts and interpreting of a briefing and a political speech.

Mykola Lukash Translation Studies Department finalised the results of the International Tranlsator`s Day Poster Competition among the students of the School of Foreign Languages. During three weeks there was a voting for the best poster. Both students and staff of the School took part in the voting. By a landslide the group YaE-42 won this competition with their poster!

We are thankful to everyone who took part in the voting and supported the participants! Congratulations to the winners and their tutor, Associate Professor Kalnychenko A.A. and wish them further success and inspiration in their creative and professional activity!

    X International Scientific and Methodological Conference "Methodological and Psychological and Pedagogical Issues of Teaching Foreign Languages at the Present Stage: School and University Integration Ways" (20.04.2018)


    Department of Foreign Language Teaching Methods and Practice traditionally follows the custom of celebrating American Halloween with 5th year students. Attending the Halloween event at the art-factory "Mechanics" 26.10.2019.


    Students and teachers of the department visited the quest room with the English script.


    • Department of English Language;

    Modern world technologies are changing the way the world is perceived, and new knowledge and knowledge management skills are emerging, thus there are new models and tools for teaching, learning and assessment. Strelchenko Diana (lecturerof the English Language Department at the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Karazin Kharkiv National University) uses Instagram as a modern tool during her classes. Photo Discussion, Inquiry Question, Photo Challenge, Problem solving, Flashmob Language, Grammar Police, and many other tasks that make students happy every time they learn English.


    On the basis of the Department of the English language, a practical seminar of the Ukrainian Association of Language Testing and Assessment UALTA “Promoting Acurate Assessment of Writing” was held by Olga Kvasova, Head of the Association (November 15, 2019).


    • Department of German and French Languages;

December 13, 2019 Associate Professor of the Department of German and French Languages E. Belozerova held an open lecture "Silent night, holy night - the most famous Austrian Christmas song in the world" in the Austrian library.


The head of the department Rudneva IS An annual cycle of lectures and practical courses was held on the advanced training course for teachers of general educational institutions of various types and forms of ownership and teachers of higher educational institutions of I-II levels of accreditation, providing full secondary education at the French language course. At the end of the six-week course, students who completed the courses received a certificate and an appendix to it in the prescribed form, which meets the requirements of the order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine dated 19.01.2016 No. 34 “On documents on advanced training”.


Carrying out a scientific on-line conference "Modern tendencies in science", which is to be held from March 25 to April 26, 2020 by the Department of German and French Languages of the V.N. KarazinKharkiv National University. Students will be able to demonstrate their diverse abilities by submitting an article in a foreign language in collaboration with the lecturer. After the on-line conference finishes, an electronic collection of scientific papers is published. The materials are devoted to the modern tendencies in science of natural and humanitarian fields of knowledge.
