Developing Reading Skills With and Through Digital Technologies (eREAD)

Perspectives and Future Directions

The final meeting of the eRead project consortium took place on October 8–10, 2025, in Tartu, Estonia, hosted by the University of Tartu. This concluding event provided an essential platform for evaluating the outcomes of the project and discussing strategic directions for future collaboration.

During the visit, partners reviewed the pilot results of the professional development course for teachers, as well as the open online course “Ukrainian as a Foreign Language”, developed within the project and delivered at the B1 proficiency level through the Moodle platform. Technical and language support for the international meeting was provided by Svitlana Virotchenko and Ganna Gusieva, head of the Department of Foreign Languages for Professional Purposes. At the event Karazin team was represented by Associate Professors Halyna Hubarieva, Inna Litvinova, and Yuliia Kalashnyk from the Department of Ukrainian Language.

Comprehensive reporting documentation—both technical and intellectual—was discussed and finalized for each work package, including:

  • A module on developing reading skills for undergraduate students;
  • A professional course for schoolteachers on fostering students’ reading competence;
  • The open online course in Ukrainian as a Foreign Language (B1 level).

The partners also explored future opportunities for cooperation, building on the solid foundation of shared goals, mutual expertise, and digital educational resources developed during the eRead project.

Beyond the working sessions, participants had the opportunity to explore the cultural and academic heritage of Estonia. The visit included tours of the University of Tartu Library and Museum, the Estonian National Museum, and the AHHAA Science Centre, further enriching the intercultural dimension of the partnership.

The outcomes of WP4 and the project as a whole reaffirm the importance of sustainable digital solutions in modern education and open the door to continued innovation in the fields of language learning and reading instruction across Europe.

Study visit of Karazin Team to Estonia

The team of Karazin University (Virotchenko S.A., Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Assoc. Prof., Gusieva G.G., Acting Head of the Department of Foreign Languages of Professional Purposes, Ushakova N.I., Professor, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Kalashnyk Yu.I. and Hubareva G.A., Ph.D., Associate Professors of the Department of Ukrainian Language) prepared a presentation and a speech for the study visit within the framework of the eRead project "2022-1-EE01-KA220-HED-000089331/ Development of reading skills using digital technologies" of the EU Erasmus+ program, which took place on May 6-10, 2024 in Estonia. The intensive program of the event "Learning, Teaching, Training activity" included presentations of the national teams and acquaintance with project elaborations of partner countries within the framework of the project tasks. The venue of the events were several educational and scientific institutions: Narva College of the University of Tartu, Estonian Language House (offices in Narva and Tallinn), Estonian Language Institute, Narva State Gymnasium, Rohuaia kindergarten (Rakvere), private school in Tallinn. The participants had the opportunity to attend classes in the student groups of Narva College for the study of Estonian as L2, to get acquainted with the rich library fund of the institution. Preschools and schools were impressed by the level of smart digitalization and streamlining of the space for learning needs and the development of "soft skills" of students. The teachers of the Estonian Language House shared their experience of teaching the language taking into account the personal educational needs of students, as well as the experience of integration activities – learning the language through creative and practical activities. The Estonian Language Institute presented a translated e-dictionary containing the Ukrainian language.

During the week, the participants of the event from Slovenia, Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia exchanged experience (seminars, workshops, trainings, workshops) on the methodology of teaching the state language as a foreign/second language in educational institutions of different levels, and also prepared for the development of an electronic course for independent study of their state languages as foreign language.

Part of the visit was a cultural program with interactive tasks within the framework of the project: "City as a text" (exploratory tour of Narva, Rakvere), reading the landscape (on the example of the Viru swamp).

During the visit, further strategies for developing an e-course on independent study of Ukrainian as a foreign language were discussed with colleagues from Zaporizhzhya National University.

The team of the School of Foreign Languages (Svitlana Virotchenko, the dean of the School of Foreign Languages and Ganna Gusieva, the acting Head of the Department of Foreign Languages for Professional Purposes) prepared Karazin University team for study visit of the international project. Yulia Kalashnyk and Halyna Gubareva, Associate Professors of the Department of the Ukrainian Language took part in a study visit within the framework of the Erasmus+ project “Developing Reading Skills With and Through Digital Technologies (eREAD)”, which took place on October 9-13, 2023 in Koper (Slovenia). The working language of the project is English. The project, in particular, is aimed at implementing innovative digital practices in teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language.

During the week, the participants of the eREAD project from four countries (Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine) exchanged theoretical studies and practical experience of teaching the state language as a foreign/second language in institutions of different levels: kindergartens, schools, universities, educational centers for adults. Events took place in several locations: University of the Sea (Univerza na Primorskem), People's University (Ljudska univerza Koper), Central Children's Library.

An important part of the program was also attending classes in local kindergartens and schools where Slovene is taught as a second language: the participants had the opportunity to participate in the learning process and familiarize themselves with methodological materials. In addition, the focus was on the formation and development of reading skills in children and adults.

At the meeting, directions for further work to implement the project's goals, terms, and stages of development were outlined.
