About the project
"Multimodality and Transmediality" is an international scientific conference in Philology, which is held every two years at V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. In 2022 and 2024, the conference will be held with the participation of Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University, the Ukrainian Association of Cognitive Linguistics and Poetics, the Bulgarian Association of Rhetoric.
In the modern world governed by information technologies, meanings are constructed with diverse semiotic resources. Therefore, the conference gives the scholars from different fields a patform to discuss the interaction of verbal (oral and written) and non-verbal (visual, audial, olfactory, etc.) means that are involved in the construal of meanings conveyed in non-digital and digital formats and employed in different domains of societal interaction. The discussion pivots are multimodality as “an integrated use of different modes in the process of social semiosis” (Kress, 2010), and transmediality which “in the broadest sense constitutes the communication of information across more than one medium or sign system” (Salde & Torop, 2012).
The range of topics is concerned with meaning-making in diverse communicative domains ofculture, politics, and media (literary and other arts, politics, business, education among others), where interaction exhibits multimodality, transmediality, intra- and intersemiotic overlaps.
