Department of Business Foreign Language and Translation


The Department of Business Foreign Language and Translation was founded in 2001 to provide professional training for Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students of the School of Economics. Over time, it expanded to teach the School of International Economic Relations and Travel Business, now known as the educational and research institute “Karazin Institute of International Relations and Travel Business”. The department focuses on foreign language training for specific purposes, meeting the requirements of the Educational Standards for fields such as “Economics,” “Accounting and Taxation,” “Finance, Banking, and Insurance,” “Marketing,” “Management,” “Entrepreneurship, Trade, and Exchange Activities,” “Public Administration and Management,” as well as “International Economic Relations,” “International Relations,” “Public Communications and Regional Studies,” “Hotel and Restaurant Management,” “Food Technology,” and “Tourism.”

The department offers courses in foreign languages for professional communication and translation. Students can study English as a first or second language and choose a second language from German, French, or Spanish. Modern teaching methods are employed, including CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), as well as advanced technologies such as computer-assisted learning, video, audio, and multimedia tools. These resources are available for both full-time and part-time students studying one or two foreign languages according to their chosen educational and professional program.

All courses comply with the standard curriculum for professional communication in English, German, and French, as recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. They also align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN in the field of quality education, global partnership, etc.,with European language education standards and national qualification frameworks. This ensures that graduates achieve a high level of proficiency in their first foreign language (ESP) at B2/B2+ levels for bachelor's and master's degrees.

The department is led by Doctor of Philology, Professor, and Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Iryna Shevchenko. The teaching staff is known for their high professionalism, scientific expertise, and extensive practical experience. They participate in academic exchange programs with universities in the United States, France, England, Germany, and Poland. Additionally, they take part in international conferences, round tables, and research projects. The department also trains postgraduate and postdoctoral students in the field of Philology (specialty 035), conducts research in philology, foreign language teaching methods, and psychology, and publishes the international online scholarly journal Cognition, Communication, Discourse.
