The Department of German Philology and Translation provides training for specialists in German language and literature, teachers and translators ( specialty 035 "Philology"; specialization 035.043 "German languages and literature (translation inclusive)"; educational program "German language and literature and translation and English language") at the bachelor's and master's level. The training is carried out in full-time and part-time forms.
After completing the first (bachelor's) degree of higher education, the applicant receives the qualification "bachelor of philology" (240 ECTS credits, 4 years). The purpose of the bachelor's level educational program is to train qualified specialists in the field of German philology, capable of performing specialized tasks and professional activities related to the use of German and English languages: teaching German language and literature, teaching English language; interpretation and translation; organization of communication; analysis, creation and processing of language material. The educational program is focused on the comprehensive training of qualified philologists with knowledge of German and English languages for the implementation of professional teaching, translation, research and communication activities. Education takes place through the theoretical, practical and research training of specialists by professing of modern and relevant knowledge and skills in the field of German philology: linguistics, translation studies, literary studies, teaching methods, scientific research. Practical training is also carried out through pedagogical and translation practice. Pedagogical practice takes place on the basis of schools, gymnasiums and lyceums, where teaching of German and English is carried out and supervision of the work of trainees, appropriate methodological and technical conditions of the educational process, safe working conditions are provided. Translation practice takes place on practice bases, which can be enterprises and organizations in Kharkiv and the Kharkiv region. Students can take their practice in other cities of Ukraine if they have a letter of invitation stating the need for the presence of a student intern at this enterprise. The base of practice can also be the subdivisions of V.N. Karazin University. Research training is provided by teaching the theoretical content of the subject area, the formation of general scientific competencies (in particular, rational thinking, logic, academic responsibility, etc.), participation in the Scientific Society of Students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of V.N. Karazin University, student conferences, competitions of student research papers, writing course projects.
Graduates of the Faculty of Foreign Languages who have received the first (bachelor's) level of higher education in the educational and professional program "German Language and Literature and Translation and English" can work in educational institutions, translation agencies, in mass media, in IT, in various institutions and organizations with the need for teaching, translation, research and communication professional activities related to the use of German and English languages.

After completing the second (master's) degree of higher education, the applicant receives the qualification "Master of Philology" (90 ECTS credits, 1 year 4 months). The purpose of the educational program is to train highly qualified, competitive specialists in the field of German philology, providing for a sufficient level of development of professional competencies of to ensure the process of intercultural communication with wide access to employment at the Ukrainian and international labor market; preparation for independent scientific research in the field of philology, in particular in the field of Germanic linguistics and translation studies. The program is focused on the integration of theoretical (professional training in the field of German and English philology) and scientific activities within the framework of relevant specialties. The program focuses on the formation of professional competencies in the theory and practice of foreign languages and translation (German and English), in the methodology of teaching foreign languages in higher educational institutions, as well as the ability to create innovations and carry out research in the field of translation studies and German and English philology. Training takes place in the form of theoretical and practical activities, with the involvement of foreign assistants - native speakers of the German language, as well as internships abroad. Practical training is reinforced by completing assistant and translation practice. Assistant practice is carried out on the basis of higher educational institutions in Kharkiv under the supervision of the heads of practice, teachers of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, according to the criteria for evaluating practice developed by the scientific and methodological commission of the faculty. The assessment includes assignments in pedagogy and psychology. Translation practice takes place without interruption from classes, is conducted under the guidance of experienced teachers from the Department of German Philology and Translation. The practice allows students to gain experience of distance work that is relevant in modern conditions. Research training is provided by writing a qualifying master's work, as well as participation in projects of the Scientific Society of Students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of V.N.Karazin Kharkiv National University, participation in republican competitions of scientific works, publications in a collection of articles "Actual Problems of Modern Linguistics and Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages in Student Research" and other relevant publications.
Graduates of the Faculty of Foreign Languages who have received the second (master's) degree of higher education can work at various scientific, literary, publishing, educational institutions, which is ensured by the presence in the educational program of a cycle of psychological, pedagogical and methodological disciplines, as well as the assistant and translation practice; in particular: educational institutions, print and electronic media, IT, PR technologies, various foundations, unions, humanitarian funds, museums, art and cultural centers and other institutions and organizations with the need for translation services.
